Tafseer Imdad-ul-Karam, volume 1, page 32, note 30: In this manner, Allah (most high) taught Adam (peace be upon him) the names, details and characteristics of all things (Tafsir Ruh al-Ma‘ani). Then to prove that man was worthy of being the deputy of Allah (most high), the angels and the devil were asked to name these things. When they expressed their inability to do so, and Adam (peace be upon him) named them, Allah (most high) said to the angels, “Did I not say that I know what you do not know?” In order to show the superiority of man over the angels, Allah (most high) did not ask questions concerning theology, prophethood or worship, but rather He asked them the names and properties of material things in the universe.
