Shadow Minister visits Jamia Al-Karam ______________
On Friday 4 January 2008, Shadow Minister for Communities and Local Government and the Member of Parliament for Wycombe, Paul Goodman, visited the Jamia Al-Karam School based in Retford. The local Member of Parliament, Patrick Mercer OBE, was also present at the School on this occasion. Both members of parliament spent nearly two hours at the school where they had the opportunity to meet and discuss issues of mutual concern with the School’s Founder and Principal, Shaykh M I H Pirzada. As Shaykh Pirzada came to the United Kingdom and served as a Muslim Chaplain and Minister of Religion in High Wycombe for more than eight years, Paul Goodman was delighted and pleased to meet and share ideas with Shaykh Pirzada who had spent much time in his constituency over two decades ago. During his visit, Paul Goodman had the opportunity to see and hear first-hand the workings, achievements and ambitions of the School. Opportunities that were being provided by the School to its pupils who come from various inner-city backgrounds were highlighted. Positive contributions being made by the School and the graduates of the School nationally were also discussed. After the evening meal at the School, Shaykh Pirzada presented some of his written works to Paul Goodman including Muslims in a Multicultural Society and The Islamic Perspective on the London Suicide Bombings. Previously, a tribute was paid by Patrick Mercer to the school in the House of Commons, on Tuesday 17 April 2007, in a debate on integration and cohesion that was introduced by Paul Goodman. [ENDS]
