wpe8047907_1b.jpg The recent four hour lecture by respected Shaykh Pirzada held on Sunday 17th December 2006 at Leeds Makkah Masjid has been hailed immensely beneficial by those who attended. The Gateway to Divine Mercy event was jointly organised by Jamia Al-Karam, AKSA and Leeds Makkah Masjid. For the past few weeks volunteers had continuously been distributing posters and flyers and been very busy in promoting the event. The event featured a powerful lecture by Shaykh Pirzada on one very crucial issue that has been continuously discussed over the past years.

Shortly before ‘Asr Prayer, Shaykh Pirzada arrived at Leeds’ beautiful Makkah Masjid and was welcomed by the volunteers who had been there working in preparation for the event. Following ‘Asr Prayer, the Imam of Leeds Makkah Masjid, Imam Muhammad Asim welcomed the Vice Principal of Jamia Al-Karam, Bakhtyar Haider Pirzada al-Azhari, to commence with the programme. Bakhtyar Haider Pirzada al-Azhari introduced the whole programme and then formally the programme began with a recitation of the glorious Qur’an by Gulfraz Farid, a first year student of Higher Islamic Studies (Dars Nizami) at Jamia Al-Karam. Following the recitation, Muhammad Ahmad Ashrafi – a graduate of Jamia Al-Karam and presenter of na’t show on TV – sang the prominent Qasida Burda of Imam al-Busiri.

This was followed by a formal speech by Imam Muhammad Asim who spoke on the importance of education and knowledge. Following the first speech, the President of AKSA and Imam of the Manchester Central Mosque Victoria Park, Imam Muhammad Arshad al-Misbahi, spoke for a while on a similar topic highlighting that ultimate solution to all problems lies in the pursuit of knowledge. Following his speech, Maghrib Prayer was offered.

The second session after Maghrib Prayer formally began with a recitation of the first five verses of Surat al-‘Alaq recited by Muhammad Zia – a second year student of Higher Islamic Studies (Dars Nizami) at Jamia Al-Karam – followed by a translation from Rizwan Hussain, a third year student of Higher Islamic Studies (Dars Nizami) at Jamia Al-Karam. Imam Muhammad Arshad al-Misbahi then gave a formal introduction to Shaykh Pirzada as he was called forward to deliver his well-researched lecture. Shaykh Pirzada’s lecture was in two parts.

The first part was a complete analysis of the issue concerning the noble Messenger (pbuh) not reciting at the advent of the first revelation. This part was titled ‘Could the holy Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) read?’ Shaykh Pirzada explained the entire issue explaining in much detail the beloved Prophet’s ability to read. He presented new logical proofs and explained every point step by step giving easy to grasp examples to clarify the somewhat complex intellectual and linguistic issues. By the end of this part, which continued for nearly two hours, the audience was left with a clear picture concerning the greatness and excellence of the noble Prophet (pbuh), what the word ummi means and that the Prophet (pbuh) could read but declined for the reasons that Shaykh Pirzada gave.

Following the first part, Shaykh Pirzada asked the audience to stand up, move a few steps and then sit down again. He explained that everybody had just acted upon the Prophet’s Sunnah. If a person in a mosque gets tired, he is to stand up, move a few steps and then sit down again. The second part of the Shaykh’s lecture was on the importance of education as seen through the first five verses that were revealed on that occasion in the Cave of Hira and how the vast majority of these significances concern the pursuit of scientific research and advancement. This session also provided immense knowledge for all those who were present. Shaykh Pirzada was able to highlight that the first few words of the Qur’an to be revealed thoroughly point to the seeking of scientific knowledge. Towards the end of his lecture, he passionately urged the youth to take the initiative and progress in this regard. In particular he highlighted the role the youth played at the time of the Prophet (pbuh) and how much of a significant role young Muslim women played in the advancement of Islam.

Throughout his lecture, he extensively gave references from the literature he had brought with him including the Sahih of Ibn Habban, al-Mawahib al-Ladunniyya of Imam al-Qastalani and Dr Maurice Bucaille’s The Bible, the Qur’an and Science. The lecture was unique as it was translated point after point into English by Bakhtyar Haider Pirzada al-Azhari.

The event concluded with a salam upon the Prophet (pbuh), a formal du’a and Isha’ Prayer. Following Isha’ Prayer, refreshments were provided by Leeds Makkah Masjid. Many scholars and masha’ikh also attended to benefit from this inspirational event. May Allah (most high) accept these efforts and grant Shaykh Pirzada a long and healthy life so that he may continue to guide the Muslims in these times of difficulty. Amin.
